Slide-out seals take a beating - they compress and flex every time the slide moves in or out, 12 months a year in Florida's UV and heat. A seal that starts showing cracks or separation lets in drafts, rain, and insects. Florida's humidity makes this worse because moisture that enters around a compromised seal stays trapped, accelerating interior mold and wood rot.

There are several different seal types on each slide: wiper seals on the top and bottom of the slide aperture that sweep debris away as the slide moves, D-seals and bulb seals on the interior frame that create the final weathertight barrier when the slide is retracted, and slide topper awnings that prevent debris from accumulating on the slide top. We replace all of these.

Signs Your Slide Seals Need Replacement

Wind noise or air movement when the slide is retracted, visible light around the slide frame, water dripping inside during rain, and debris or insects entering around the slide are all signs of seal failure. Run your hand along the slide frame perimeter from inside with the slide retracted - you'll feel any air leaks immediately.

FAQ

Common Questions

Every 5 to 7 years for RVs used regularly, or sooner if you see cracking, tearing, or compression set (seal no longer bounces back when compressed). Florida UV accelerates seal deterioration - inspect annually.

The wiper seals are DIY-accessible and are sold by the foot at RV supply stores. The interior D-seals and corner seals are more complex - the slide often needs to be extended or retracted to specific positions to access the mounting screws. We can do the full seal replacement in a few hours.

Use a rubber-compatible slide seal lubricant - typically 303 Aerospace Protectant or a similar rubber conditioner. Never use WD-40 or petroleum-based lubricants on rubber seals - they degrade the rubber over time.

Slide seals are a very common source of water intrusion. Before replacing seals, we also check the slide topper (if equipped) and the caulk seam at the coach wall around the slide opening - these can also be water entry points.
