Hydraulic slide systems are common in larger Class A motorhomes and provide smooth, powerful slide operation. They are more complex than electric systems and require hydraulic fluid maintenance, pump diagnostics, and valve testing. When a hydraulic slide fails, it usually does so slowly - progressive loss of speed or holding force - rather than a sudden complete failure.

HWH hydraulic systems, which power both slides and leveling jacks on many Class A coaches, share their hydraulic pump and reservoir. A pump failure affects both slides and jacks simultaneously, which is the defining diagnostic clue for pump vs valve failure when both systems are slow.

Hydraulic Slide System Failures We Fix

Hydraulic System Service

Annual hydraulic fluid service is recommended for coaches with hydraulic slides. We drain and replace the fluid (ATF Type F or Dexron as specified), replace the filter, and bleed the system of air. This is a 2 to 3 hour service that prevents the gradual performance degradation that leads to pump and valve failures. Fluid that's never been changed becomes contaminated with water and causes rapid internal component wear.

Service area: Apopka, Longwood, Casselberry, Altamonte Springs, Sanford, Lake Mary, DeLand, Deltona, DeBary, Mount Dora, Tavares, Leesburg, and all surrounding communities in Orange, Seminole, Lake, and Volusia counties.

FAQ

Common Questions

Low fluid is the first thing to check when slides or leveling jacks seem sluggish. Check the fluid reservoir (usually in the generator compartment or basement storage area) - it should be at or near the full mark with the slides retracted and jacks up.

Most HWH systems use ATF Type F. Lippert hydraulic systems typically use Dexron III or equivalent. The reservoir cap or system tag should specify the correct fluid. Never mix fluid types.

Minor leaks at hose fittings or o-ring seals can often be repaired without replacing the cylinder. Cylinder shaft seal leaks (fluid on the chrome shaft) usually require cylinder replacement or professional cylinder reseal.

Hydraulic fluid thickens in cold temperatures. If your RV is stored outdoors in the rare Florida cold snap, allow extra warm-up time. If it's still slow after warmup, the fluid may be old and contaminated.
