Sometimes the most economical decision with an aging RV air conditioner is replacement rather than repair. When a compressor fails on a 12-year-old unit, the repair cost is often 60 to 80 percent of the cost of a new unit - and the new unit comes with a warranty and is more efficient.
We supply and install replacement rooftop AC units for all common RV applications. The most common replacements are Dometic Penguin II and Brisk Air II units for Class A and Class C motorhomes, and Coleman Mach units for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Most standard rooftop AC units share a 14x14 inch roof opening and are compatible across multiple brands.
Choosing the Right Replacement AC
BTU rating is the most important specification. Most single-zone RV ACs are 13,500 BTU or 15,000 BTU. A 13,500 BTU unit is appropriate for coach lengths under 30 feet. A 15,000 BTU unit is recommended for 30 feet and longer, or for RVs with poor insulation. We'll recommend the right size for your specific coach before you commit to a unit.
Replacement Installation Process
- Remove old unit from roof opening (2 AC screws and the interior ceiling assembly)
- Clean and inspect the roof opening and gasket surface
- Install new roof gasket and set the new unit
- Connect wiring - direct replacement from same brand is plug-and-play in most cases
- Install new ceiling assembly and test full cooling cycle
- Total time: 2 to 3 hours on-site
